Where our data comes from

A report combines several kinds of records. Here is what each one is, and what a report cannot tell you.

Vehicle history records

Title and registration events, title brands, odometer readings, reported accidents and damage, service and inspection records, and ownership periods.

Auction sale records

Past sales of the vehicle at salvage and insurance auctions from our own archive: date, recorded damage, odometer reading and photos.

Public safety data

Recalls, owner complaints and crash-test ratings for the model from the US government's vehicle safety database, and fuel economy figures from the official US fuel economy data.

What a report cannot show

  • Only events that were reported to a records source appear. An accident settled privately or repairs done without paperwork may be missing.
  • If no records are found for the provided VIN, you receive a full refund.
  • A report does not replace a pre-purchase inspection by a mechanic.
